When it comes to fitting or adjusting a saddle for your horse, precision is key. Using a flexible ruler is the go-to tool for ensuring accurate measurements. But where exactly should you place this flexible ruler on your horse’s back?
In this reel, Jolanda sheds light on the crucial placement of the flexible ruler.

👉 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝟱𝗰𝗺 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗽𝘂𝗹𝗮
The measurements we take are used to set the treesize to the correct size. That is why it is important to place the flexible ruler on the horse’s back exactly there where we would also place the treepoints of the saddle. We aim to have the treepoints behind the shoulder blade (Scapula) at all times, not only when standing still, but also in movement. As Jolanda shows in this reel, the scapula moves approximately 5cms backwards when the horse extends its leg forward. This is why you should also place the flexible ruler 5cm behind the scapula.

👉 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀?
By carefully taking measurements, you can achieve the optimal treesize, ensuring the horse’s long-term comfort and well-being. The right treesize is instrumental! It enables the horse to:
* Move forward with ease;
* Elevate the withers correctly;
* Engage the hind legs effectively;
* Maintain a light and connected feel with the bit.

👉 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘇𝗲
How do you determine the perfect fit for a horse? Follow these straightforward steps:
1. Measure with Precision: Position the flexible ruler 5cm behind the scapula, precisely where the treepoints rest, and take the measurement.
2. Saddle Assessment: Open the saddle and measure from treepoint-to-treepoint (or steel-to-steel).
3. Compare and Confirm: Contrast the measurements from steps 1 and 2 using a wing divider. Remember, the correct treesize typically ranges from 1-3 cm narrower than the horse’s measurement.
